Christopher Nolan: “Hollywood needs franchises for other types of films to be made”

Director defended the role of franchises in the film industry, in addition to describing the area’s ideal scenario in Hollywood

Christopher Nolan gave his opinion on franchises in Hollywood, which some of his fellow filmmakers claim are affecting the quality of productions. But, in the vision of the acclaimed director of films such as Oppenheimer (2023), The origin (2010) and Batman the dark knight (2008), they are a crucial part of the film industry ecosystem.

To the Associated Press (via Variety), Nolan commented on the importance of originality in film production, but also believes in the need for these blockbusters based on pre-existing intellectual properties.

There is always a balance in Hollywood between established titles that can guarantee a return in viewership and give people more of what they want. This has always been a big part of Hollywood’s economy and pays for many other types of films to be made and distributed. A healthy ecosystem in Hollywood is about a balance between the two and always has been.”

The director also reinforces the idea that “one of the great emotions of going to the cinema is, frankly, seeing the trailer for a film you’ve never heard of or a type of film you’ve never seen”. Nolan contradicts the opinion of Martin Scorsesewho criticized the films of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), comparing them to amusement parks.
