Before working on 2016’s Thor: Ragnarok, the filmmaker had no intention of working on superhero films
Director of Thor: Ragnarok(2016) and Thor: Love and Thunder(2022), Taika Waititi He had no intention of directing superhero films in his career. In a podcast interview Smartlessthe filmmaker confessed that he only agreed to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the money.
“I had no interest in doing a superhero movie. It wasn’t in my career plans, so to speak. But I was poor, and I had just had a second child. I thought, ‘You know what? This is a great opportunity to feed these children'”revealed Waititi.
To make matters worse, the director was never a big fan of Thor and continued to dislike the character even after taking on the job: “Let’s be honest: Thor is the least popular character among all of these. When I was a kid, if I saw a comic book, ThorI thought: ‘Eww!'”said. “And when I started researching the movie, I tried reading his comics again and I didn’t get past 18 pages. I didn’t understand that character.”
Despite the “lack of preparation” of Waititihe managed to transform the Thorlived by Chris Hemsworth in the film franchise, in one of the most beloved Avengers, thanks to the changes applied from the hero’s third film, Thor: Ragnarokwhich grossed US$853 million at the box office, more than US$200 million more than the previous film, Thor the Dark Worldof 2013.
Thor: Love and Thunder?
The hero’s fourth film, Thor: Love and Thunder, also did very well at the box office and grossed US$760 million worldwide, even though it premiered during the coronavirus pandemic. Even with all the success, Waititi has already said that he will not return to direct a fifth film Thorif it ever exists.
