The term was coined by Russian-Kazakh director and producer Timur Bekmambetov, a leading figure in the development of this format. He is best known for leading the production of Screenlife’s pioneering films, such as “Friendship Broken” (2014), its sequel “Friendship Broken 2,” “Buscando…” (2018) and “Profile” (2018), the latter also written and directed by himself.
However, some experiments with the use of computer screens in films had already been carried out in the 2000s. The 2002 horror feature “The Collingswood Story”, directed by Michael Costanza, is considered the first Screenlife film. The film presents the entire narrative through webcam footage and computer desktops running video chats.
