An 85-year-old Israeli woman, kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and released two weeks later, said she met Hamas Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar while in captivity and asked him how he was not ashamed of acting violently against peace activists such as she.
Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, was taken from her home in Kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel to Gaza. She told the Israeli newspaper Davar that she confronted Sinwar when she visited hostages in an underground tunnel where Hamas was holding them captive.
“Sinwar was with us three or four days after we arrived,” Lifshitz told the Hebrew-language newspaper Davar. “I asked him how he is not ashamed of doing something like this to people who have supported peace all these years.”
“He didn’t respond. He remained silent,” she said.
Lifshitz is a peace activist who, together with her husband, has for years helped sick Palestinians in Gaza get to hospital, her nephew told Reuters. Her husband, Oded, 83, was also kidnapped and is still a prisoner.
Speaking to reporters after his release from Hamas captivity last month, Lifshitz said he had “been through hell” during the two weeks he was held hostage in the Gaza Strip.
Lifshitz was one of four women released by Hamas at the start of the war. She said she was beaten when she was abducted but was treated well during her two weeks in captivity.
After being freed, she turned to shake hands with a masked kidnapper. When she was asked why, she replied, “They treated us kindly and met our every need.”
