With an audience rating of 4.2 out of 5 on AlloCiné, Snatch is one of the highest rated films in Brad Pitt’s filmography. Filmed in the early 2000s, at the height of the American actor’s career, the role of the latter is among his most iconic characters – although it is only a supporting role.
When we love, we don’t count. After Guy Ritchie’s first feature film, Crooks, Crimes and Botany, was a total hit, Brad Pitt has informed the English director that he is willing to do anything to be cast in the second film. Even if that meant lowering his salary expectations at the time (something an independent film budget obviously couldn’t afford).
Brad Pitt’s request was not ignored by Guy Ritchie, who played him as Mickey O’Neill, an Irish traveling society boxer, in the second film: Snatch.
Hired by two crooks to fix a boxing match, the latter disobeys the accomplice’s instructions and ends up sending his opponent to the mat with one punch.
“Indescribable” accent
Although Brad Pitt’s appearance in this film contradicts his image as a sex symbol of the time, his catchphrases in particular left their mark. Unable to reproduce the London accent, the actor decided to invent his own dialect by adopting an almost intelligible dictation.
On the set of Jay Leno in 2011, Brad Pitt reviewed his performance in Snatch: “Honestly, I don’t really know how to describe the accent. I didn’t really know how I was going to do it and I was more focused on the fight scenes because I don’t know how to fight. (…) But all the lines were written. I’ve already worked on my Irish accent in the past (In the film Close Enemy, editor’s note).
However, this memorable collaboration with Guy Ritchie did not have the flavor of a comeback, as the two men have never toured together since, despite their friendly bond. Never say never ?
Guy Ritchie’s film Snatch will definitely leave the Netflix catalog on December 14.
