This is the best episode of Friends according to Matthew Perry: ‘The first time I thought the show worked’

A month ago we learned of the tragic death at the age of 54 of Matthew Perry, Chandler Bing’s famous interpreter on Friends. Broadcast from 1994 to 2004 – and constantly rebroadcast since then – the sitcom quickly earned a place in the pantheon of the greatest series of all time. As such, many lists of his best episode rankings have been published over time, and everyone has their favorite episode…including Matthew Perry.

An episode in which Chandler speaks very little

“The One with the Juice” is the seventh episode of the first season and features two storylines that take place during a power outage. On the one hand, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross exchange secrets in Monica’s apartment, on the other, Chandler finds himself stuck in the lobby of a vending machine with model Jill Goodacre.

  • Matthew Perry: His latest prank on Friends is so touching

And if Matthew Perry had a particular fondness for this episode, for two reasons: the first was the fact that most of his dialogue was recorded in voiceover, and the second, perhaps more important, was that it made him realize that the series was working, especially his Thanks to colleagues, as he confided to Entertainment Weekly in 2004:

What’s interesting about this episode is that I didn’t talk much; It was mostly a voiceover. We pre-recorded what I said and I had to react. Let’s be real: Jill Goodacre is super cool, so it wasn’t that hard…. I remember I spat out the gum and it stuck to the wall. My choice was to remain completely frozen in fear and embarrassment. It was one of those things that the producers loved and it stayed…. The great thing about that evening was that I also got to watch the other three quarters of the show where these five great actors worked in an incredible ensemble. For the first time I realized, “Well, the show is working.”

  • ‘We were completely blown away’: Chandler-Monica couple on Friends, it’s thanks to the community!

Friends It enjoyed huge success with the audience immediately after the broadcast, but it is very likely that this seventh episode was filmed before the official debut of the series on the small screen: so, for the actor, it seems that this episode convinced him that the show would be appreciated. The series eventually ran for 10 seasons and will be remembered as one of the best comedies in television history.
