The true story behind love and death
On June 13, 1980, the body of Betty Gore was found murdered with an ax in the city of Wylie, Texas, USA. The conservative community of Wylie is deeply shocked by this barbaric act, but even more so when another respected resident, Candy Montgomery, is accused of murder.
An investigation revealed that Candy Montgomery, married to Pat Montgomery and mother of two, had an extramarital affair with Alan Gore, Betty Gore’s husband. Knowing that Alan was out of town the day of Betty’s murder, the police find Candy the perfect suspect.
Alan himself asked the neighbors to check if Betty was OK that day as he could not be reached by phone. After forcing their way into the house, neighbors found the bodies of Betty and their daughter Bethany crying in her bed in the next room.
Candy Montgomery’s trial, represented by attorney Robert Udashen, lasted eight days in McKinney. Candy asked her defense to explain that she was responding to attacks from Betty, who had recently violently confronted her about her affair with her husband. He said he had no choice but to use the ax because Betty had tried to hit him with the same weapon earlier.
Candy Montgomery took a polygraph test before the trial that indicated she was telling the truth, but prosecutor Tom O’Connell pointed out that she could have tried to run away from Betty Gore’s house and that 41 strokes of the ax was a “disproportionate” response. .
At the end of the trial, Candy Montgomery was found not guilty on October 30, 1980 by a jury of three men and nine women. The verdict scandalized the public, which believes that justice was not served and that Candy Montgomery is a murderer.
