Internacional has decided to extend the contract of experienced defender Gabriel Mercado until the end of 2024. At 36 years old, the Argentine defender left a good impression especially with his performances during the Copa Libertadores da América. Colorado reached the semifinals of the tournament and fell only against the champion Fluminense, in a very balanced match.
In the Libertadores, Mercado played 11 matches and, according to Sofascore analysis, achieved an average rating of 7.06 – well above the average of 6.86 obtained so far in the Brazilian championship. He was among the best in his position in two rounds of the South American competition.
The Libertadores da América also showed that Mercado can be important in attack. The defender scored three goals – all headers – in the South American competition, in matches against Uruguayans Fluminense, River Plate and Nacional.
Mercado joined Internacional during the 2021 season, after playing for Al Rayyan, from Qatar. This season he has the best numbers with the Colorado shirt, with 43 games played – last year there were 37.
