Can you imagine a drug that makes you laugh even if you are told about a tragedy? What allows you to fall deeply in love with someone you just met? One of the Netflix releases in June 2022 includes this type of drug in the movie “Spiderhead”.
What is “Spiderhead”?
Based on the short story “Escape From Spiderhead” by George Saunders, “Spiderhead”, also known as “The Head of the Spider”, transports the audience to a vast residence on a remote island where Dr. works. Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth). with a group of convicts, including Jeff (Miles Teller), on a clinical trial program for drugs that affect their emotions.
Jeff and his colleagues have tried various substances, such as the N-40 power supply, Affectin, which makes what is in front of their eyes look more beautiful, from scenes to people. the G-46, Humoril, which makes them laugh even in the saddest moments or when they are told tragic things, or the most frightening of all I-16s, the Terrofloxx, which puts them in a state of trauma, fear and anger.
These supplies are provided by a device on their back, called a “movipack”, and they can only enter their bloodstream if inmates agree to it.
Saying “I recognized” gives Steve and his assistant Verlaine the green light to manipulate the dose of the subjects receiving the study from a mobile phone. In case of refusal of these drugs, the detainees can be transferred back to a regular prison and thus be deprived of the comforts they enjoy in the facilities of Dr. Steve Abnesti, who also has his movipack to try his drugs.
To accept to become the experimental animal of Dr. Steve is one way Jeff punishes himself after the incident that led him to jail: a car accident that killed his girlfriend and boyfriend.
Experiencing changes in his emotions or even having sex with other people like Heather and Sarah under the influence of Affectin, even when he has feelings for another prisoner (Lizzie), seems to be his way of doing things. repentance.
However, Jeff begins to doubt these tests when he has to choose who will take Terrofloxx: Heather or Sarah. According to Steve, this will let them know if Affectin has any effect on Jeff’s feelings days after taking the dose, but he refuses.
At one point it seems that Steve accepts Jeff’s decision, but shortly after he tells him that the committee in charge of the investigation did not accept his refusal and submits Jeff to see Heather under the influence of Terrofloxx.
Unfortunately, Heather’s traumatic episode causes her to damage her “movipack”, something that further upsets her, leading her to commit suicide in front of Jeff, Steve and Verlaine. The two run to help him, leaving Jeff alone in the control room, an opportunity he gets to learn more about Steve’s true plans.
Jeff discovers that Steve Abnesti is in fact the sole person in charge of the clinical program, so the committee that constantly accuses him does not exist. He also realizes that the drug he is actually trying on is B-6, a stock that they always carry with them, because it was obviously a placebo.
The end of ‘Spiderhead’ has been explained
After learning a little about Steve Abnesti’s true intentions, Jeff asks Verlaine about his complicity in these trials and urges him to do the right thing.
The next day, Verlaine does not show up for work on suspicion of a cold. However, that does not stop Steve from trying Jeff again, only in this case, it makes it more personal: Lizzy will be the one to take Terrofloxx.
Jeff refuses again, but Steve has an ace up his sleeve, so Lizzie tells him the real reason he was sentenced to prison and hoping Jeff’s opinion of her will change.
“I am the mother who killed her baby,” says a desperate Lizzie, who explains that her 9-month-old daughter died after leaving her in the car for three hours while working. He also tells Jeff to provide him with whatever Steve asks of him.
Jeff is using his cell phone, but it’s not really Lizzie who is experiencing the effects of the drug, but Steve. Yes! Verlaine decided to do the right thing and changed the supplies in his boss’s movipack, which after interrogation by Jeff, reveals the real reason for the test program: knowing the effects of B-6, a drug called “Obediex Created to make people lose their free will and obey the commands without doubt and without exception.
After learning this, Jeff warns Steve that he will pay for everything he did and that Verlaine is on his way to the island with the police to arrest him. In addition, he clarifies that he is under the influence of B-6, so he will obey him even if he does not want to.
However, Absenti reveals to him that the B-6 has a flaw, people do not obey when it comes to hurting what they love, and in his case it is their career. This puts Steve and Jeff face to face over control of the cell phone, which Steve quickly takes control of and gives Lizzy four doses of Terrofloxx.
This infuriates Jeff, who falls on Steve and knocks him down the stairs, thus destroying his travel package, causing Absenti to occasionally experience the various effects of his drugs.
Jeff runs to help Lizzie, takes her Terrofloxx and together they try to leave the Absenti facility, which, in a monumental attempt to control his emotions, not only orders the other inmates to arrest Jeff and Lizzie, but also manages to escape. on his plane.
However, the cocktail of substances in his blood continues to affect him during the flight, completely blinding him: Steve thinks he sees a beautiful sky when in fact he is flying straight to a mountain, where it crashes and explodes.
The big bang is heard from afar by Jeff and Lizzie, who managed to escape in a boat. Their escape from the Absenti facility does not really make them run away from justice, as they had both already completed their sentences, only Steve chose to keep this information to himself to continue testing them.
Together Lizzy and Jeff have the opportunity to accompany each other on their freedom and journey to find peace after the actions that led them to prison, as there is no cure for self-forgiveness.
