Mercosur is committed to regulating radicalization in the digital environment


The highlight is the commitment to take joint measures to regularize digital platforms that can increase political extremism on the continent

The presidents of the Mercosur member countries signed a special declaration on the defense of democracy and the integrity of information in digital environments during the summit which took place at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro. The text was finalized on Thursday (7) and released to the press this Friday (8). The highlight is the commitment to take joint measures to regulate digital platforms that can increase political radicalization on the continent.




The document was agreed between the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; from Argentina, Alberto Fernandez; from Paraguay, Santiago Penaand Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pouas well as the authorities of the associated states of Mercosur.

In one of the excerpts, the presidents show concern for “business models in digital environments that, with the aim of increasing advertising revenue and business results, increase the recommendation and reproduction of distorted and false information and hate speech, which contributes to ideological polarization in several sectors of society, mainly affecting people or communities in vulnerable situations, aggravating trends of radicalisation, extremism and violent acts”.
