Nominated for Sundance last January, Cha Cha Real Smooth had a sensational debut, winning the coveted Audience Award. Last year, Apple presented at the same CODA festival that won the Oscar for Best Picture for its first film release on the streaming platform.
Can lightning strike twice? Like Cian Hedder, director of CODA, Cooper Rife of Texas is directing his second feature film here, having already made a name for himself with his first film, Shithouse. An actor and director, he already stands out as a unique voice in the American independent film landscape.
In Cha Cha Real Smooth, he plays Andrew, a boy who is a bit lost after college and who discovers a talent he did not bet on in the first place. But this is a meeting with Domino, played by Dakota Johnson – also the producer of the film – the mother of a young autistic girl who connects well with Andrew, which really annoys her.
