The week brings with it some surprises among the most watched series of the week, such as an extended version of Australia, with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman
The end of the year is not a time of stasis for fans of the series. Just take a look at the list of the most watched series of the last week to see how people take advantage of the arrival of the holidays to catch up on marathons, while discovering new productions at the same time. The result of this is that our weekly ranking continues to be quite packed and with some very interesting surprises.
The best example of this is the curious Welcome to Australiaa miniseries that arrived on Star+ and which is nothing more than an extended version of the films Australia, from 2008. Proving that it is not only Brazilian cinema that relaunches its stories in more than one format, the film directed by Baz Luhrmann is renewed and brings the epic with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman in the form of a miniseries in six episodes, extending the story and better developing both the characters and the plot. It is, at the same time, a director’s cut of the film and a celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the film’s release.
Another very interesting novelty that arrived on streaming was the series Surgeries and tricks. Despite the terrible name in Portuguese, the production is a kind of continuation of the classic Oliver Twist, showing what happened to the character Jack Dawkings after the little thief was arrested in England. Then he is sent to Australia (he looks at the country there again) and we follow his new life and the return of old habits.
Closing the list of the most watched series of the week, we have the reality show Round 6: The challenge once again growing, demonstrating not only the popularity of the format, but also how the Netflix series itself still continues to resonate with audiences. Remembering that the ranking is formed based on the search data carried out by users on the JustWatch platform.
10. Evil surgeon
True crime documentary series, Evil surgeon is a Netflix original production that, during its debut week, became the second most watched title on streaming. Divided into three episodes, the show tells the story of the scandals involving the well-known surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, famous for his trachea transplants with stem cells.
Highly impactful, the documentary shows the entire journey of the professional’s rise in the medical community until he discovered that his patients were dying shortly after surgery. A revelation considered one of the biggest scientific frauds of recent years explained here through the testimonies of the victims’ family members, colleagues and former companions of the doctor.
Evil surgeon is available on Netflix.
9.Loki
Even though it ended a few weeks ago, the second season of Loki continues to trend on Disney+. Highly praised and consistent, the production had a roaring season finale and was a breath of hope for Marvel after a series of failures in film and TV.
Created by Michael Waldron, the new season follows Loki as he tries to solve his time slippage problem, in which he is pulled, uncontrollably, into the present and the past. To do this, he tries to ask the OB repairman for help (Ke Huy Quan), while continuing with his plan to save AVT.
Loki can be seen on Disney+.
8. Blue-eyed samurai
Netflix original anime, Blue-eyed samurai It’s a pleasant surprise from the streaming catalog. Since its debut, the animation has caused a lot of talk on social media, managing to win over the public both for its interesting plot and its beautiful artistic direction.
Created by the couple Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, the series is set in 17th century Japan and follows in the footsteps of the master swordsman Mizu. A mixed-race warrior who becomes extremely skilled in sword fighting, she gains fame throughout Japan, embarking on a journey of personal revenge.
Blue-eyed samurai it is part of the Netflix catalogue.
7. The planet of the vultures
Another animation that will appear in the list of the most watched series of the week, The planet of vultures tells the story of the crew of a cargo ship who, after being damaged by a solar explosion, ends up on a strange planet. At first, the space wreckage doesn’t seem like a big deal, as the place is beautiful and seemingly peaceful, but it doesn’t take long for them to face the true nature of the place.
Therefore, the group must fight both to survive and to find their way out. Between dealing with the threats that present themselves at every moment and finding escape routes, each moment is more desperate than the last.
The planet of vultures is available on HBO Max.
6. Rick and Morty
One of the most popular adult animations of recent times, Rick and Morty returns with its seventh season to take the protagonist couple on new adventures across dimensions and reality in increasingly crazy and highly incorrect ways.
The premise of the cartoon is satirical in its essence. Subvert the classic image of Back to the Future, we have an old scientist who uses a young boy as a guinea pig in his experiments. The difference is that instead of traveling through time, they spread chaos throughout the multiverse.
Rick and Morty is available on HBO Max and Prime Video.
5. Monarch: Monster Legacy
Proving that kaijus are still on the rise and that a good giant monster is still great entertainment, the series Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters is one of the pleasant surprises among the end-of-year previews. The Apple TV+ series is set in the same world as Godzilla AND Kong: Skull Islandbringing the story of the company responsible for tracking and monitoring these titanic creatures.
To that end, the plot follows a family’s journey after the events of the premiere Godzilla. After learning that the monsters of legend are real, we follow these protagonists as they explore their family heritage and discover that their story is intrinsically linked to that of these creatures. With Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell, Legacy of the Monsters follows three generations of this family, alternating the script between past and present.
Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters is available on Apple TV+.
4. Round 6: The Challenge
Dribble everything controversies around the proposal and accusations behind the scenes, Round 6: The challenge has established itself as another sure bet for Netflix. The reality show replicates the dynamics of the famous South Korean series, seeing 456 participants from all over the world compete for a prize of $4.56 million, considered the highest amount ever paid in a competition of its kind. To do this they will have to simulate the experience of the oriental series, that is, isolate themselves in their own complex and participate in lethal versions of children’s games.
It’s fine that no one actually dies, but the idea is to simulate this too, as well as the predatory dynamics that encourage competition and even sabotage of opponents.
For this reason, the show has been accused of contradicting the message against the commodification of suffering and the price of life within the capitalist logic presented by the original series. And, given how much The challenge is still on the rise, it seems like the public has no problem with that.
Round 6: The challenge is available on Netflix.
3. Surgeries and tricks
One of the surprises of this early December, the series Surgeries and tricks it is a sort of sequel to the literary classic Oliver Twist. The terrible Portuguese title doesn’t make it clear, but the series focuses on the character Jack Dawkings – the clever pickpocket from Charles Dickens’ book – after he is arrested in England and sent to Australia. In the new country, the prince of thieves decides to change his life and becomes a skilled surgeon.
The problem is that his past continues to haunt him and his true identity may come to light, ruining his new reputation. At the same time, the temptation of a life of crime has not been completely eliminated, which leads him to take risks once again, running the risk of losing everything.
Surgeries and tricks presents Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Maze Runner: Run or Die) as Jack Dawkings and is available on Star+.
2. Invincible
Even after the end of the first part of the second season, Invincible is once again among the most viewed of the week. Based on the comic by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), the story centers on the figure of Mark Grayson, a boy son of the most powerful superhero on the planet.
But instead of taking this legacy as a source of pride, Grayson realizes that his father is not the heroic figure everyone imagines and realizes that there are many secrets behind it. So, when he himself awakens his powers and becomes the invincible hero, he must learn to walk his own path so as not to become a repulsive figure like his father.
Escaping the clichés of superhero stories, Invincible uses the language of animation to focus on violence and create unique situations within this universe of super beings and aliens.
Invincible is available on Prime Video.
1. Welcome to Australia
Remember the movie Australia, released in 2008 with Hugh Jacksman and Nicole Kidman in the lead role? The film directed by Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) is far from being one of the icons of cinema, but he seems to have a very loyal fan following. The director only needed to release a sort of extended version of the film for it to become the most watched series of the week.
Welcome to Australia it is nothing other than this “director’s version” of the film which, after 15 years, finally reaches the public. Divided into six episodes, the miniseries presents the same story we saw at the cinema, but with more time to delve deeper into some themes, develop the characters and present some parallel plots that were left out in the original cut.
We then follow the story of this English aristocrat, played by Kidman, who moves to Australia and needs to team up with the farmhand played by Hugh Jackman to protect her ranch from the greed of a local farmer. An epic that can be seen as the Pantanal gringo, but without anyone becoming a jaguar (or kangaroo).
Welcome to Australia is available on Star+.
