Estudiantes beat Defensa y Justicia and won the Copa Argentina

The goal in the second half brings Pincharrata into the next edition of the Libertadores

At the end of the Argentine football season, Estudiantes became champions of the Copa Argentina. In the decider, against Defensa y Justicia, the team won 1-0 and, in addition to the unprecedented title, guaranteed a place in the 2024 Libertadores.

In a match with notable differences in playing style, both teams had occasions where defensive errors were decisive. Above all to scare the goalkeepers Mariano Andújar and Enrique Bologna. On the defensive side, Zaid Romero deflects a cross from the right, against his own goal, and explodes onto the crossbar. As for Estudiantes, a pass that generated indecision in the Halcón defense fell to Franco Zapiola where Bologna made an important intervention to close the final corner.

In the initial phase the engagement involved numerous physical disputes. Whether due to the decisive nature or the less common situation of not using a Video Referee, the two teams did not hesitate to interrupt the plays more harshly. However, there was room for moments of inspiration in which Eros Mancuso and David Barbona made Andújar and Enrique Barbona work decisively. When Pincharrata’s goalkeeper wasn’t the “antagonist”, Gastón Togni was just a few centimeters from the net. At that moment the door is open in front of him and at the level of the small area.

Efficiency and the gunner’s nose

In the complementary phase, the duel resumed with a more cautious pace on both sides until a surge on the right opened the scoring for Estudiantes. Shortly after giving a crescent to the marker, Leonardo Godoy created the cross where, in a split with Bologna, the ball ended up within Guido Carrillo’s reach. The center forward doesn’t waste the opportunity and, despite the fall, sends it into the net after nine minutes.

The style of play that seeks to dominate the creative volume, being a characteristic of the Defense, was only strengthened by the disadvantage on the scoreboard. The same goes for the La Plata team, which closed the defensive lines and positioned itself to play “extended” at the sides of the pitch. However, despite the tendency of the match to become a real ‘attack against defence’, Halcón saw nervousness as an extra opponent in the decisive moments of the match. Proof of this was the action of left back Alexis Soto, already booked, who received the second yellow card which led to his expulsion.

In this way, the concentration and precision in the idea established by Pincharrata were decisive until Maximilano Ramírez’s final whistle consecrated the La Plata club with the Copa Argentina title.
