The “Barbie” director will preside over the 2024 Cannes Film Festival

Director Greta Gerwig has been chosen to chair the jury of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Her most recent film, “Barbie,” has become a cultural phenomenon and the world’s highest-grossing film of the year. In addition to her leading the nominations at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, she is also expected to receive several Oscar nominations.

In thanking the invitation, Gerwig expressed her passion for cinema. “I love films, I love making them, I love watching them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of cinema can be,” the director said in a statement.

Gerwig’s choice represents the “rebirth of world cinema”, according to Iris Knobloch, president of the festival, and Thierry Frémaux, general director, who underlined the filmmaker’s ability to break down barriers and mix genres.

She will be the first American director to assume the role of jury president at the Cannes Film Festival. At 40, she is also the youngest person to hold the position since Sophia Loren in 1966.

Starting her career as an actress in independent film in 2006, Gerwig gained recognition as a director with “Lady Bird” in 2017, becoming the fifth woman to receive an Oscar nomination for best director. Her second film, “Little Women,” was also a critical success and was nominated for five Oscars, winning the award for best costume design. Now, with “Barbie,” Gerwig has become the highest-earning female director in history, celebrating record sales of $1.4 billion worldwide.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from 14 to 25 May.
