Released on July 13, 2022 in French screens, Thor: Love and Thunder was a true critical failure, both in terms of press and audiences, with a 2.6 out of 5 for press and a 2.3 out of 5 for audiences. Making it the lowest rated Marvel movie to date. Marvels also received a 2.3 out of 5 from viewers, but the number of ratings is much lower, with Thor 4 holding that “record”.
This failure is all the more surprising because the previous Thor – directed by the same Taika Waititi – was a huge success for the audience with a very decent rating of 3.8 out of 5. After the success of Thor: Ragnarok, it seemed like Taika Waititi had found the perfect formula that could work for future Thor movies.

The comedy in Ragnarok worked so well to help the serious moments have more impact, but Love & Thunder never quite found the right balance, only providing constant hype that didn’t add weight to the story being told, and it wasn’t really a happy ending. Thor’s arc in Infinity War and Endgame was incredibly emotional, but all that emotion was lost in Love & Thunder.
Many felt that, despite good performances, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, as the mighty Thor, and Christian Bale as Gore, the executioner of the gods, were completely absorbed by the story and its comedic aspect, when they should have had more punch.
The entire core of Thor’s new story was stripped out to make way for a steady stream of comedy, ignoring the main stories of the previous film. What should have been an important addition to the Thor series and the MCU as a whole, therefore came across as sterile and weightless. But can we still be surprised when Chris Hemsworth himself considers the film “too stupid”?
If you haven’t seen it, it’s enough to form your own opinion, because Thor: Love and Thunder is now available on Disney+.
