The former athlete is currently one of Brazil’s leading sports commentators.

Commentator Caio Ribeiro, of Rede Globo, revealed important behind-the-scenes details regarding the relationship between the athletes and the management of Botafogo in 2005 in an interview with “Charla Podcast”. It was the last year of the former striker’s career.

According to Caio Ribeiro, the team that was fighting for a place in the South American championship was going through a turbulent period among players and management. Even though he was against the strike, the experienced Caio was one of the leaders of the team. The former athlete also revealed that he was invited to take up the position of director of the club after he retired.

-I remember the last round of the Brazilian championship as if it were today, there were many things involved. I didn’t know it would be my last game and I wasn’t thinking about retiring. There was a fight between the players and the management, we were three months behind on wages and then the players went on strike. Management said they did not understand the reason for the strike, claiming they were up to date. However, I know that, being one of the leaders of the group, everything was blamed on me, when in reality I was one of those who fought against the strike. I’ve always been against it. This was an internal thing, I never told anyone, but I was always against it. I remember that that was a crucial match of a season in which we were leading the championship, a large part of it was in the Libertadores area and in the end the South American team remained there. For me it was very important. He was bringing Botafogo back to an international competition in which the club had not competed since 95, when they were Brazilian champions. There was a lot at stake in that match against Fortaleza and I knew it would be different from the others – said Caio Ribeiro.

-Montenegro, thank you, because the way I left was not the way I would have liked to leave, even though everything was going well. But one way to show me that you understand and that our relationship is truly special is this invitation you make to me, concluded the commentator.

Despite all the turbulence, Botafogo finished the 2005 Brazilian championship in 9th place, ensuring qualification for the 2006 Copa Sudamericano.
