American box office: Wonka debuts as the most watched film of the weekend

Wonkaprequel film The fantastic chocolate factoryhas just been released in theaters and is already “sweetening” the lives of many people: the film starring Timothée Chalamet premiered on December 15th and was the most watched of the weekend in the United States, grossing 39 million dollars at the box office office domestically and 151 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo data.

Directed by Paul King, Wonka works as a prelude to the 1971 work, that is, it tells the story of the character before the events of The fantastic chocolate factoryAND.

The version features Timothée Chalamet, from Dune (2021), as Willy Wonka, a character played by Gene Wilder in 1971 and Johnny Depp in the 2005 remake.

In addition to Chalamet, Wonka features a strong cast that includes Hugh Grant (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Sally Hawkins (The shape of water), Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Olivia Colman (The favourite), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Matthew Baynton (Ghosts), Simon Farnaby (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Paddington2), Keegan-Michael Key (Schmigadoon), Matt Lucas (Doctor who), Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus) and Rakhee Thakrar (Sex education).

Although the 1971 film did not achieve great financial success, the film received Oscar nominations and quickly became popular.

The arrival of the 2005 remake, however, directed by none other than Tim Burton, consolidated the success of the production, earning more than 450 million dollars and finally taking home an Oscar (best costume design). The remake also awarded Depp the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.
