Reddit moderators had a lot of work to do this weekend. The controversy surrounding the Amazon TV series “Boys” is a satire that mocks politics, superheroes, and celebrities, and that some troubled characters have won the favor of some Internet users.
In episode 5, which has been available since last Friday, Blue Hawk, the new watchman played by Nick Wexler, has to go to a black community to apologize for killing an unarmed man. His speech – in which he does not ask questions at all and which reinforces the character’s racism, which ends in violence and the shout of “All Lives Matter” (“All Lives Matter” in English, the slogan associated with the extreme right) – so defended the fans.

The latter compiled a few excerpts from the topic on the Boys’s topic site and commented:
“The Reddit forum on The Boys is now in absolute chaos. Discussion topics are closed, users angrily delete entire accounts. ᲨExcellent. The rightists are complaining because they do not want politics, but now it is impossible to talk about the show without them. Fans who thought The Protector was cool are in crisis.”
And add:People are wondering how Redditors can empathize with The Protector (or Darth Vader or someone else) when the character is clearly a villain. They know he’s a bad guy. They want to expose the perpetrator as simply incomprehensible and then redeem him so as not to feel embarrassed.”
The Reddit moderator confirmed on Twitter that all the comments defending the show’s most toxic characters gave him a lot of work to do: “I’m a moderator there. 3 days have passed since the new episode and there are still reports of “Blue Hawk was right” / “Becca was not raped” and so on. Comments left and right. I spent the whole day on it.”
And to be sarcastic to specify: “We have launched moderator apps today, you too can be a moderator of TheBoys, it * is * overly fun *.”
Still, other network users allowed themselves to be ridiculed by everyone who complained that the series had become too political, pointing out that this was always the case, while celebrating the issue in a satirical way.
During the interview Digital correctionThe show’s creator, Eric Kripke, really remembered that politics has always been in The Boys’s DNA:When I was hired, I had dinner with Gart Ann, who wrote the comics. And I asked him, “What inspired him to create it?” He said: “I was curious to see what could happen if you combined the worst of politics with great popularity. And he wrote it in 2006.”
Moreover, for the screenwriter, one of the scariest characters in the series is the caricature of Donald Trump, the patron saint. “He has always been the equivalent of my Trump. I admit that I am a little more direct this season than in previous seasons. But the world is becoming increasingly rough and less elegant. Of course, he feels victimized and unfairly thinks that people were angry that he was meeting the Nazis. The only thing he wants is to be the strongest person he can be, even if he can not do it at all.

If this is what Eric Kripke wants to condemn, Internet users, on the contrary, see Anthony Starr’s character as a flawed character who needs redemption and not as a dictator who has become one. This has recently sparked much debate on Reddit and social media.
