Yu Yu Hakusho | What to expect from a second season of the series?

After the premiere of the first season of the Netflix live action, the question remains as to where exactly the story of Yu Yu Hakusho will go next

Yu Yu Hakusho debuted on Netflix in its live-action version, adapting the first major narrative arc of the classic manga and anime, which explains all the concepts of the story and introduces the characters. But some changes to the plot have longtime fans wondering what to expect from a possible second season of the series.

Although Netflix has not yet confirmed the production of other episodes for the series, it has already clarified the path it can follow, after some adaptations of what would be the most popular narrative arc of the anime.

No tournament, but with an old spiritual detective

The first season of Yu Yu Hakusho It may only have five episodes, but the producers have basically managed to combine two original story arcs. The most obvious is the initial arc, of the Spiritual Detective saga, which introduces Yusuke Urameshi, his death and his return as responsible for solving cases with demons, as well as introducing Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama into the story.

The episodes placed greater emphasis on Yukina’s rescue, as well as incorporating elements of the Dark Tournament saga, the anime’s most famous story arc. The Toguro brothers are present, as well as important tournament fights involving Hiei, Kurama, and Yusuke. These events end up being resolved in the first season, which could completely eliminate the need for the tournament arc in the live action version.

In the anime, the Dark Tournament is a competition organized by very rich and greedy humans who pit demons against each other and enjoy betting on who lives and who dies. It is in this context that the quartet of protagonists ends up entering into the dispute and the definitive clash with Team Toguro.

Netflix’s live-action series carries part of this plot with it, albeit in a very simplified way. The idea of billionaires betting exists, but without an actual tournament being held.

For this reason, a possible second season could even go back and bring the dispute back to the screen, mainly to help better develop secondary characters, such as Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama, as well as introduce other figures who will become important to the saga. However, considerable changes would be needed, such as the return of villains and allies. Since this is a series that is open to these returns due to the context of the plot itself, this cannot be completely ruled out.

An already mentioned villain

While, the problems with the second season of Yu Yu Hakusho can be resolved if a brief comment made in the first episode of the season is explored. Right after the Shadow Tournament arc, the story of Yu Yu Hakusho presents the figure of Shinobu Sensui, the Supernatural Detective who worked ten years before Yusuke.

In the first episode of the live-action, Koenma comments on Urameshi’s predecessor, stating that the detective position had been open for years, ever since he left office.

Sensui is one of the best characters in the anime, showing a hero-to-villain arc with strong motivations that can be well explored in the series, even if it features a character who is nothing more than a version of the protagonist gone wrong, that is, who you have not completed your Hero’s Journey. Sensui is someone with much more potential than Urameshi, but he ends up getting lost along the way and becoming an implacable enemy.

This story arc also reveals secrets about Yusuke himself and how far his powers can go, which would make for a very interesting parallel plot to see in live-action. Also, it would be a great opportunity to see more of Hiei and Kurama’s powers, which end up being more developed at this stage of the anime. On the other hand, these are stories that required a lot more visual effects, which would make the production more expensive.

Of course, everything depends on the confirmation of a second season for the series, which hasn’t happened yet. It may take some time to make the decision, but you can take this opportunity to rewatch the five episodes of the season Yu Yu Hakusho is available on Netflix.
