Currently the councilors have the only elective office whose age must be proven at the deadline for the registration request. Senate bill 5281/19 establishes standardization, so that the minimum age constitutionally established as a condition of eligibility has the inauguration date as a reference. for all positions.

According to the project’s rapporteur, MP Murilo Galdino (Republicanos-PB), the aim is to standardize the requirements for all positions. With the new law it will be possible to run and be elected at the age of 17, if the person turns 18 before taking office.



A Federal Constitution establishes the minimum age of candidates as a condition of eligibility. Anyone who wants to run for president of the Republic, vice president and Senate must be at least 35 years old. For governor and deputy governor you must be 30 years old. Federal, state, district deputies, mayors and deputy mayors must be 21 years of age. Finally, counselors must be 18 years old.
