In the Season 5 episode “Bart Becomes Famous”, Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner attempt to talk to Homer and Marge. After Marge was unable to answer the call in time because she was in the shower, the scene shows Homer answering the phone with a towel around his waist, even though he is at work.
Homer replies: “Yellow? You will have to talk. I use a towel. For years, writer Josh Weinstein thought the line meant one thing, but recently made up his mind Twitter to explain his misunderstanding and the true meaning of the gag:
For 25 years I thought (and loved) that it was all bullshit, but then someone explained to me what people with long hair say when they have a towel on their wet hair (and ears) after a shower when they answer the phone. . It makes 100% sense, but I also like jokes less.
Not only does Homer not have a towel on his head for the scene in question, but he also hasn’t had enough hair to justify that line in a while. It’s a classic Homer moment, though, and as someone who never really got the line, I agree with Josh Weinstein that it lessens my appreciation for him a bit.
The surprising thing about this news is that Josh Weinstein hadn’t realized this before, since he was inside The Simpsons‘writing during the production of this episode. It’s amazing to think he spent two and a half decades without fully understanding the context of the joke, but perhaps not too surprising with the number of jokes the show made during that time. I’m sure you’re not the only student who has thought about it and you won’t be the last.
Beyond this Homer gag, Disney + subscribers it would do well to take a look The Simpsons‘”Bart is getting famous.” In particular, Bart imagines the head of celebrity Kitty Carlisle in a jar. This gag would pave the way for a long-standing idea futurama, which featured celebrities of our time in the future as heads in jars (something we’re looking forward to in the final season of the show’s return).
