The Tyrannosaurus Rex, built specifically for Jurassic Park, posed a major problem in every sense of the word: it did not even fit in its warehouse!
Remember that Jurassic Park contained only 15 minutes of dinosaurs and yet it was precisely these creatures that were most celebrated by moviegoers! And even though they end up not so involved in his film, Steven Spielberg used every means to bring them to life, and especially the movie star: T-Rex!
At the time, Steven Spielberg went to Stan Winston School, a renowned school of special effects and visual effects, to bring in Stan Winston, who a few years earlier filmed James Cameron’s Alien Queen for the movie Aliens, the Return. His 4.2-foot-tall doll, which was manipulated by 16 people, made an impression on the Indiana Jones director.
Building a “life-size” T-Rex has never been possible, but it was necessary for some scenes in Jurassic Park. Winston took on this challenge by building a creature 11.5 meters long and 5.48 tall that weighed 5.4 tons. Just a concern: the beast was nowhere! Doll John Rosengrant recalls:
T-Rex is hungry!
‘We can raise the roof and widen the door to get out the other end … we will change the building’. You really felt that you were in the heart of something special … you were sculpting a dinosaur. Few people in the world can say the same thing.
And indeed, the roof is raised by four feet to accommodate the film’s stellar creature, whose only clay sculpture took 16 weeks to work on. In addition to this “full-length” version, a second beast animation has emerged, specially built for close-up shots of a tyrannosaurus head.
You might think, given its importance in the film, that Spielberg has always been a fan of the tyrannosaurus, but his favorite dinosaur is not this famous predator. He really prefers the triceratop, which was his first toy as a child.
