Seeking to maintain its hegemony, Corinthians, grand champions of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, will debut in the competition on January 3 against Ji-Paraná (RO) at 9.45pm (Brasilia time). Among those linked to Alvinegro is the young midfielder Thomas Agustin, 19 years old.
Also known as Argentino, Thomas was born in Buenos Aires and moved to Brazil at the age of six. The star player Alvinegro began his career in a small school in Barra Funda (Barça Academy Pro Barra Funda), when he received an invitation to try out for Corinthians at the age of twelve. Approved, he completed all the youth categories up to the under 20s.
It is not the first time that the midfielder faces Copinha. A championship veteran, Thomas is making his third appearance in the tournament. In the first match he didn’t have many opportunities and only played 15 minutes. In the second, after a year of good performances, he becomes the team’s starter, but Corinthians does not perform well and falls in the third phase of the Copa São Paulo.
“At the last Copinha we didn’t have a good performance. We know our responsibilities and the expectations placed on us. Corinthians is the biggest winner of the competition, so we must always try to be among the best. I think we are much better prepared collectively this year and we are working to represent Corinthians in the best way possible,” said the midfielder.
In addition to his experience with Copinha last year, Thomas trained for a period in the professional group, when Vítor Pereira led the team.
“The first time I arrived as a professional I was a bit stuck, but the people welcomed me very well and I managed to integrate straight away. It’s an incredible experience to be there among the professionals, they are players with a lot of experience and history with the club. I was able to take advantage of every opportunity to learn and listen to the advice they had to give me.” concluded the Argentine.
It was with Timão’s shirt that the player began to be called up to the Argentina national team’s youth team. The midfielder played in the South American Under-15 Championship wearing the blue uniform, but lost the final against Brazil on penalties.
At Parque São Jorge, Thomas was champion in his second season with the club, with the Campeonato Paulista under 13 in 2017, winning the State Championship again with the under 17s in 2021. Thomas’ contract with Corinthians runs until July 2025.
In addition to Ji-Paraná (RO), Corinthians will also face Bangu and Marília in the Copinha group stage.
