The text does not call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire
The UN Security Council approved on Friday (22) a resolution requiring the parties involved in the conflict in the Middle East to allow “the safe and unhindered provision of large-scale humanitarian assistance”, creating permanent corridors.
The text does not call for an immediate truce, nor does it include the original phrase “urgent suspension of hostilities”.
After days of postponements, the resolution also calls for the creation of “conditions for hostilities to cease in a sustainable manner”.
Russia and the United States, who could have vetoed the resolution as permanent members of the college, abstained. The text passed with 13 votes in favour.
US Ambassador to the Council Linda Thomas-Greenfield called the resolution a “strong step forward.”
“This advice offered a glimmer of hope in a sea of suffering,” he said.
The proposal was promoted by the United Arab Emirates and went through several negotiating sessions to avoid a new veto.
The ambassador of the Emirates, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, said that the proposal “responds with facts to the humanitarian situation. We know that it is not a perfect text, we will not stop calling for a humanitarian ceasefire”.
The resolution also calls for the appointment of a UN humanitarian coordinator to oversee third-country aid to Gaza. .
