Where were the Harry Potter films filmed?

The Harry Potter saga, by award-winning author JK Rowling, has been successful for over 20 years and continues to reach more and more generations with its captivating stories. Among the best things about the films are the amazing settings. Find out more about the filming locations and where the franchise’s iconic scenes were filmed below.

Almost real scenarios

Some people believed that only studios or virtual set production technologies recorded Harry Potter scenes. However, the author herself, JK Rowling, revealed that, to set the scene and bring the public closer to the universe of the famous wizard, the eight films of the saga used different locations. In addition to Warner Bros. studios, recording took place in locations across the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland and Wales.

Platform 9¾

To represent platform 9 ¾ of the Hogwarts Express, described in the books with realism, they chose King’s Cross station in London as the setting during the recording of Harry Potter. They used part of the station wall, approximately between platforms 4 and 5, to film the scenes in which Harry and his group magically cross the brick barrier to reach the Hogwarts Express.

Today, at the filming location, there is a luggage cart that seems to magically disappear into a wall under a sign for Platform 9 ¾.

The train to Hogwarts

One of the famous scenes in the saga shows the Hogwarts train passing over a viaduct. The Glenfinnan Viaduct, completed in 1901 in Inverness-shire, in the Scottish Highlands, was chosen to give the film the necessary realism.

The viaduct, located approximately 30 meters above the water, crosses the Finnan River and offers passengers an impressive journey.

Dursley House

The Dursley house, famous above all in the books and throughout the Harry Potter saga, in fiction is located at 4 Privet Drive, but in reality it is a residence built at 12 Picket Post Close, in the town of Bracknell.

In the story, the little wizard lived in this place, inside a wardrobe, with his uncle Vernon, his aunt Petunia and his cousin Dudley Dursley, before leaving for Hogwarts.

Interestingly, after filming, Warner Bros. decided to build a replica of the house in a studio.

The Leaky Caldeirão tavern

The entrance to the famous Leaky Cauldron tavern is actually the door to a business on the Bull’s Head Passage in London’s Leadenhall Market. In the film, the pub is located in Diagon Alley, the then famous shopping street where wizards bought spells and potions.

The flight of the broom

One of the moments that shaped generations was when Harry performed the famous broomstick flight. In fact, the setting chosen for this scene of the little wizard was Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland, in the north of England, which appears in the first film as the stage for Madame Hooch’s lesson on how to fly on a broomstick.

Currently, the place is used to host events and exhibitions related to the Harry Potter saga.
