The IOM already counts almost 2,300 victims this year

Nearly 2,300 people have already died trying to cross the central Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe in 2023, which is a 60% increase compared to the same period last year.

The data were released by Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesperson for the Coordination Office for the Mediterranean of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which this year has 2,271 victims of death trips in the region.

In the same period of 2022, 1,413 deaths were recorded. “We reiterate once again that the emergency of arrivals by sea is not numerical, but humanitarian,” Di Giacomo declared on X (formerly Twitter).

The Central Mediterranean route is used by migrants and refugees to travel from Libya and Tunisia in North Africa to Italy and Malta in the south of the European Union.

According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the country has already welcomed almost 154,000 international refugees by sea in 2023, an increase of 52% compared to 2022.
