Many fans of The Crown have been wondering at what point in Elizabeth II’s life the Netflix production will end. In the final episode of the show, broadcast on 14 December, it was revealed that the series ends in 2005, seventeen years before the Queen’s disappearance.
Despite everything, the death of the queen affected the end of the crown. In the middle of filming for season 6 (production was halted for a few weeks as a mark of respect), the monarch’s disappearance also caused the originally planned ending to be changed. However, show creator Peter Morgan isn’t pushing to end his series these days.
“It was the limit of maintaining a historical approach, not a journalistic one” The English screenwriter explained to our colleagues at variety. Although he considered moving the end of the story to 2022 to show the Queen’s death, the latter ultimately decided to touch on her future death from 2005.
We’ve all had that funeral experience. And since we all felt emotions about it, I had to find a way to cause the character to die in the final episode, even though he wasn’t dead at the time.
During the final episode, Elizabeth II (played by Imelda Staunton) is faced with the possibility of her own death as she begins writing her royal will. The series ends with the Queen alone in Windsor Chapel, where she and her husband, Prince Philip, will be buried a few years later.
“I wrote the last episode as a conversation in the Queen’s head and I was wondering if it should be given to Charles.” explains Peter Morgan The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we could make that idea come true through the conversation she would have with the younger version of herself. It was a fun challenge because I decided not to end the series at all costs. Nowadays.”
In this scenario, in which Imelda Staunton seems overcome with authentic emotion, the actress is actually joined by two of the Queen’s previous interpreters (Claire Foy and Olivia Colman) to pay dignified and heartfelt tributes to the monarch.
“Playwrights were made to write about kings and queens. It’s our duty.” Peter Morgan, a recent royalist, has pointed out that he is not ruling out the idea of a spin-off, provided the plot takes place before The Crown. So don’t expect a TV series about Prince William vs. Prince Harry, or Charles III’s ascension to the throne…
All six seasons of The Crown are now available exclusively on Netflix.
