The episode occurred in an elementary school in Northern Italy
The headmistress of a school in northern Italy caused a stir among children when she claimed during a Christmas play that Santa Claus does not exist.
The episode occurred at the San Giuseppe Catholic school, in Torri di Quartesolo, 60 kilometers from Venice.
In a speech to primary school pupils, the director Milena Meggiorin, speaking about helping others, peace, imagination and dreams, said that “the moment will come when our children will notice the signs that Santa Claus does not exist, or they will discover Mother and dad hand out the presents.”
Some little ones, however, burst into tears when they learned from the director that the good old man wasn’t real. “Our children started crying in disbelief,” a parent of a student was quoted by the Giornale di Vicenza newspaper as saying.
“The adults understood that the director’s intention was not to cause discomfort, but perhaps it would have been better if this message had been addressed only to parents,” added a mother.
Meggiorin apologized for having “unleashed the fury of some parents” and said his intention was to highlight the importance of “magical thinking” in children. .
