Netflix kicks off 2024 with Double Trap, marking its latest collaboration with bestselling author Harlan Coben. It’s an adaptation of his 2016 novel of the same name, and here’s a synopsis:
When Maya, an ex-soldier, unexpectedly sees her husband on a spy camera, whom she thought was murdered, she discovers a murder plot rooted in the past. The cast includes Michelle Keegan (Maya), Richard Armitage (her husband) and Adele Akhtar as a police officer.
Cobain does not change his style with this new work, which is a thriller in the proper form, with a story of disappearances, revelations of secrets, mysteries and a heroine who investigates despite the danger. If The Double Trap is quite classic in content and form, the writer seems to be particularly proud of this adaptation.
in the given interview Radio Times Last October, Cobain said that the ending of Double Trap would surprise many, implying that it was different from his novel:
“You will be shocked by the ending. We chose not to have an open ending, and I think that’s for the best when you watch the show. We wanted this ending to be surprising and exciting. Our last episode is surprisingly the shortest. We wanted to get to the point.” (It’s only 35 minutes long, editor’s note).
A script choice he justifies to satisfy Netflix subscribers. Double Trap will not have a second season as well Another Harlan Coben series for Platform, since it was presented as a mini-series from the beginning. AlloCiné, which was able to access episode 8 in a preview, confirms that the screenwriters have taken a very different direction from the novel and are more grounded in reality: this is especially true of corrupt pharmaceutical companies and artificial intelligence.
If Double Trap didn’t revolutionize the genre, it certainly respected its audience…
