The Pope’s first mass in 2024 brings together 7,000 faithful in the Vatican

Love, women and peace were the main themes of the Angelus

Seven thousand faithful went this Monday (1st) to St. Peter’s Basilica for Pope Francis’ first mass in 2024.

During the celebration, the pontiff wanted to talk about love as one of the main themes, underlining that true love “does not suffocate” and “is not possession”.

“Even our mothers, with their hidden care, with their zeal, are often magnificent cathedrals of silence. They bring us into the world and continue to accompany us, often unnoticed, so that we can grow. Let us remember: love never suffocates, it ‘love gives space to others, love makes us grow,’ he said.

The pontiff invited the faithful to think of mothers “to learn that love that is cultivated mainly in silence, which gives space to others, respecting their dignity, allowing freedom to express themselves, rejecting every form of possession, oppression and violence. It’s there so I really need it today!”

The Pope also defended that the Church must give space to women. «The Church needs Mary to rediscover her own feminine face: to be more similar to her, that she, woman, Virgin and Mother, represents the model and the perfect figure; to give space to women and be generative through a pastoral care made of care, concern, patience and maternal courage”, he underlined.

At the Angelus the Pope also renewed his appeal for peace: “Please, let us not forget Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, which are at war. Let us pray for peace to come”.

The Pope asked everyone «the resolution and commitment to be builders of peace every day, even in the new year.

Every day, peacebuilders, bringing peace.”

On Twitter, Jorge Bergoglio also recalled: “Today we celebrate the 57th World Day of Peace, with the theme ‘Artificial Intelligence and Peace’. Let us pray together that these new technologies may be at the service of the human family and help build paths of brotherhood.” .
