Every individual, company and national and subnational government must be aware that they are also responsible
Environmental changes caused by human action are global problems. They are causing the global warmingthe increase in natural disasters, air and water pollution, the melting of the polar ice caps, changes in ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity.
They cause significant economic losses, such as loss of agricultural crops, scarcity of natural resources, impacts on human health, threats to food security and water shortages. Global measures are being adopted, such as the Paris Agreement and the initiatives taken at COP-28.
It’s a global problem, but part of the solution is local. It depends on the awareness that every individual, every company and every national and subnational government is also responsible. The term “glocalization” combines the words “global” and “localization”, managers must act by thinking globally and acting locally.
There are progress and setbacks. In St. Paul, allowing more buildings without a proportional increase in infrastructure causes more congestion and, consequently, more pollution per kilometer travelled. Simple measures, such as making streets more bicycle-friendly, would contribute positively.
Another obstacle in Sao Paulo is the inspection of the Blue Zone. At first it was monitored by walking agents. It was labor intensive, job generating and non-polluting. We have moved on to controls with vehicles which, in addition to polluting, congest traffic even more.
In Itu, progress has been made on the climate issue. Entrepreneurs have developed strategies to neutralize the environmental impact of their activities. Projects like “Adote springs” and “Arboretum”, a forest with 49 endangered native species, contribute to a healthier planet.
The municipality has taken actions such as the recovery of biomes, the inclusion of the bioeconomy theme in schools, professional training in bioeconomy and circular economy and the expansion of biogas production in rural properties, among others.
Local action is essential to improve environmental issues. It requires every citizen to adopt, as far as possible, actions such as promoting public transport, saving water and energy and the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle what is possible. Every manager, public and private, must copy the best environmental practices. Everyone’s efforts will promote everyone’s well-being.
