European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Saturday raised the alarm that Lebanon would be embroiled in a regional conflict due to Israel’s war with Hamas.
Borrell said during a visit to Lebanon that it was imperative to avoid regional escalation in the Middle East, and warned Israel that “no one will benefit from a regional conflict.”
The comments come at a new audience with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, following talks with senior government officials to discuss events in and around Gaza, including the impact of the war and the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border.
“We are seeing a disturbing increase in shootings along the Blue Line,” Borrell said.
The current dividing line between the two countries is known as the Blue Line, a border mapped by the United Nations that marks the strip into which Israeli forces retreated when they left southern Lebanon in 2000.
