If you are an anime fan, chances are that Yu Yu Hakusho is among your favorite series. If you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, or if you want to relive the adventures of Yusuke Urameshi and his friends, Netflix offers a great opportunity with its new live-action adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s work. In this comprehensive guide we’ll explore everything you need to know before watching the Netflix series!
What is Yu Yu Hakusho?
Yu Yu Hakusho has its origins as a manga written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, serialized in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump by the publisher Shueisha between 1990 and 1994. The work was compiled in 19 volumes, published from 1991 to 1994. A second edition, in deluxe format, consisting of 15 volumes, was republished by Shueisha between 2004 and 2005, with new covers for the volumes.
In the Brazilian market, publisher JBC licensed the manga and published the first version in a format that split each original volume in two, between 2002 and 2004. In 2014, the manga was published again by JBC, this time in a complete format, as well as the Japanese original, also consisting of 19 volumes.
The Yu Yu Hakusho anime originally aired between 1992 and 1995, for a total of 112 episodes. In Brazil, Tikara Filmes acquired the licensing rights to the anime and its dubbing, produced by Audio News, has gained notoriety especially thanks to the adaptations made to our language.
What is the story of Yu Yu Hakusho?
The story of Yu Yu Hakusho begins with Yusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent teenager, who unexpectedly ends up dying in an act of heroism while saving a child from an accident.
In the afterlife he meets Koenma, son of the ruler of the underworld, who explains that Yusuke’s good deed was so amazing that they don’t know exactly where to send him. Koenma then proposes an opportunity to return to life.
After facing several challenges related to his return, Yusuke is revived and assigned as a supernatural detective, taking on the responsibility of investigating cases involving demons and ghosts in the human world.
In his first mission, Yusuke recovers three stolen treasures from the underworld, facing and subsequently allying with characters who share the spotlight with Yusuke throughout Yu Yu Hakusho, such as Hiei and Kurama. During these adventures, the protagonist develops the “Leigun”, a powerful spiritual attack taught by the shinigami Botan, which allows him to defend himself from his paranormal opponents.
As the plot unfolds, Yusuke and his classmate and school rival, Kazuma Kuwabara, participate in a martial arts tournament organized by the master Genkai and we finally have the main group of characters in the plot, who now face different monsters and supernatural demons.
How far does the Yu Yu Hakusho series go in the anime?
With a total of five episodes, the series covers the first arc of the plot entirely, concluding at the very end of the Spiritual Detective saga, corresponding to the first 25 episodes of the 1992 anime.
Over the course of the narrative, several changes are implemented, some that give more dynamism to the plot and tie up loose ends for those who haven’t followed the anime or read the manga, but others that could affect the course of the story if the series were renewed .
In the live-action, the outcome occurs immediately after the clash between Yusuke and the young Toguro, won by the protagonist and his companions, who opt for the path of “torture” when they are sent to the Spiritual World. Unlike the anime, the series ends with a conversation between Yusuke and Keiko, in which she expresses her gratitude for helping her – and not immediately after saving Yukina.
Will the series have a second season?
If Netflix decided to renew the series, it would be essential to explore the adaptation of the Dark Tournament, which is considered the best narrative arc of Yu Yu Hakusho and for this reason more than 5 episodes would probably be needed, especially to delve into all the narratives and contexts presented in one of the longest arcs of the work, with exactly 40 episodes.
However, based on the events of the first season, it is very likely that if there is a renewal, even more changes will be necessary compared to the original work.
Who is in the cast?
The cast of the Yu Yu Hakusho series includes several young talents from Japanese TV and cinema. Highlights include Takumi Kitamura, known for his role as Takemichi Hanagaki in the live-action “Tokyo Revengers” films, who will take on a new starring role as Yusuke Urameshi, and Go Ayano, known for his roles in the adaptations of “Tokyo Revengers.” Ajin” and “Rurouni Kenshin,” who will play the villain Toguro in the series.
Additionally, we have Kuwabara played by actor Shuhei Uesugi, and Hiei brought to life in the performance of Kanata Hongô, known for his performances in the live-action “Fullmetal Alchemist” as Envy, and in “Attack on Titan”, as Armin’s clothes. Jun Shison will play Kurama and Keita Machida, recognized for his work in “Alice in Borderland,” will play the role of Koenma.
Whether you already know “Yu Yu Hakusho” or not, you can watch the Netflix adaptation without worries, however it is important to point out that the series has some differences from the source material and significant changes in the plot.
