Israel has appointed former Supreme Court Chief Justice Aharon Barak as a member of an International Court of Justice panel that is expected to consider genocide charges leveled against the country this week, an Israeli official said on Sunday.
Under ICJ rules, a state that does not have a judge of its nationality on the court’s staff can choose an ad hoc judge to hear its case.
South Africa, which accuses Israel of genocide in the Gaza war, also appointed an ad hoc judge, former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke, South African media reported.
