With more than 12.3 million viewers in France, the comedy Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?, released in 2014, is one of the biggest successes of French cinema in recent years. What shall we do with the good Lord?, a film in which Cyril Hannouna almost starred, tells the story of Claude and Marie Vernot, from the provincial Catholic upper bourgeoisie, rather “old French” parents.
The couple should have always kept an open mind… However, it was a very hard pill to swallow when their first daughter married a Muslim, the second a Jew and the third a Chinese. Their hopes of eventually seeing one of them get married in the church are therefore centered on the youngest, who, hallelujah, has just met a good Catholic.
It was with the help of “helpful statistics” that director Philippe de Chauveron discovered that the French were the leaders of intermarriage, the first idea of what to do with the good Lord? Laub. “Various studies say that about 20% of unions in our country are between individuals of different backgrounds and faiths”he declares. “Among our European neighbors, the figure would be around 3%.”
Hailing from a bourgeois Catholic family himself, Philippe de Cheuvron had fun imagining what diversity would look like in such a conservative environment. He also experienced this type of situation because his brother married a North African woman and he in turn married an African woman.
What shall we do with the good Lord?, two sequels were released: What shall we do with the good Lord again? and What Have We All Done to the Good Lord?, released in 2019 and 2022 respectively.
