‘In my day we’d shoot a love scene and move on’: Michael Caine gives his take on Intimacy Coordinators

Now 90, acclaimed British comedian Michael Caine has appeared in nearly 150 films and won two Academy Awards during his long and storied career. Known for his roles in The Hound, The Man Who Would Be King, God’s Work, The Devil’s Part and even Christopher Nolan films, he recently announced his well-deserved retirement.

Last September, when he spoke about his latest film, The Great Escaper, on the microphone DailyMailMichael Caine also turned to various issues and was particularly questioned on the issue of intimacy coordinators. A profession that was created in the wake of the #MeToo movement and established itself on Hollywood sets to provide actors with a safe and secure environment while filming sex scenes.

“Really? Seriously? Who are they?”It started by surprising Michael Caine with his comedian friend John Standing.

“We never had that in my day. Thank God I’m 90 years old and I don’t play lovers anymore, that’s all I can say. In my time, we did a love scene and moved on without anyone interfering. Everything has changed.”

Challenged by recent changes in society and especially the evolution of morals, the two actors explained that their grandchildren helped them understand these changes and that they were doing their best to adapt to them.

“I’m doing my best too”– said Michael Caine. “But it’s boring. You can’t say what you think and you can’t call someone ‘cute.’ (…) I’m trying, but it’s hard. I like to learn from friends who are younger than me.”
