Maycon, known as the “snack aunt”, made the athlete Vinícius uncomfortable with her clever talk
On the morning of this Tuesday the 9th, participant Maycon, from BBB24, known as the “snack aunt”, was coaching with the PwD athlete Vinícius. In a video circulating on social media, Maycon asks if he can call his colleague’s mechanical leg a “cotinho”.
What is ableism?
“We’ll put a nickname, a name on the bag, huh,” Maycon said. Participant Marcus, who is next to his brother, asks him to stop, but the cook continues. “No, let’s go. Let’s go.” After Marcus states that “the joke has a limit”, Maycon asks the athlete: “Can we give the cotinho a nickname?” Vinícius is visibly uncomfortable and does not respond to the cook.

On social media, Internet users criticize Maycon’s actions. “Less than 24 hours into the program and Maycon has already been trained twice with Vinicius, and whether it bothers you or not, these types of questions shouldn’t be asked of an amputee if you don’t have the minimum level of intimacy,” wrote influencer Ivan Barone.

Crime
In Brazil, ableism is a crime, provided for in Article 88 of Law No. 13,146 / 2015, or Brazilian Law on Inclusion, which defines the crime as “practicing, inducing or inciting discrimination against a person because of his or her disability”. The penalty is one to three years’ imprisonment and a fine.
