Within days of its release on Netflix, In Flight is already at the top of the weekly Top 10. It’s no surprise when we know that this is the platform’s new big movie and that it’s being carried by several famous faces: Kevin Hart, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jean Reno, Sam Worthington and even Ursula Corbero, star of the hit TV series La. Casa de Papel which remains in the same registry.
starting pitch? A skilled and experienced art thief plans an impossible heist with his elite team: to steal half a billion dollars worth of gold from a plane in the sky. This heist film is directed by genre veteran F. Gary Gary, who is already working on Italian Heist and Fast and Furious 8.
Despite that promise, Netflix subscribers who discovered In Full Flight this weekend seemed unconvinced by the proposition. Currently, it has an average rating of 2.3/5 on its AlloCiné profile. And the critics are not kind to the film!
“Usually, F. Gary Gray isn’t bad, but he screwed up in this one. It already takes an hour to start, an hour fills us with “technical” details and other things we don’t care about, then comes the action and then the silliness, we have zero suspense, zero tension, zero empathy. , it’s getting boring, we can’t wait to finish it. The acting is very average, leading to disaster (Jean Reno). The only small consolation is Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s smile!” (Estonia)
“All the action movie clichés of the 1990s and 2000s. On the edge of tolerability…we’re hoping that to clean up the picture, Kevin Hart will clown around and make us laugh…but unfortunately, this turd does nothing but take itself too seriously.” (Emmanuel Beaumont)
“Time goes by, it’s funny not to be funny. Even if there are incredible moments, the film does its job, we watch it without any problems.” (Davy Crockett)
“No credibility, we see too many special effects, no originality and disappointing acting” (Bruno Macrezi)
“Comedy action movie. Time flies thanks to the action scenes. Quality casting. Of course, some inconsistencies hamper the credibility of the script, but this does not prevent the film from being watched without boredom.” (Ant Lau)
So what can we learn from this criticism?
As we explained in our review, In Flight is pure entertainment designed exclusively for home viewing: yes, what we see is incredible or far-fetched, but that’s what Netflix is selling here.
The American giant seems to be using the same formula for all these action films, hoping to turn them into franchises (like Red Notice or 6 Underground), focusing more on the headliners than the direction or story. And the gamble paid off, as the examples here have been among the most viewed productions on the platform since its launch.
If the quality of In Full Flight is lacking for a few subscribers, this will not prevent the Kevin Hart film from being the most visible worldwide, even with limited advertising in the US.
