Actress Florence Pugh (“Black Widow”) will star in a new miniseries based on novelist John Steinbeck’s book “East of Eden,” in development at Netflix. The production will see Zoe Kazan (“Love Sick”) as writer and executive producer.
Zoe Kazan is the granddaughter of famed director Elia Kazan, who directed the first film adaptation of the play, released in 1955 and responsible for starting James Dean’s career. The film is known in Brazil under the title “Bitter Lives”.
Florence Pugh will play Cathy Ames, described as “a real monster, without sensitivity and without conscience”. In the plot the character is the mother of the protagonists, brothers destined to repeat the trajectory of Cain and Abel.
The age of the actress suggests an approach with an emphasis on the first part of the story, centered on the relationship between Adam (name not subtle) and Cathy (an Eve that reflects the biblical view of the sinner – who succumbed to temptation and made drive humanity out of Eden).
In the 1955 film, the character appeared only briefly as an elderly woman (played by Jo Van Fleet), because the classic production centered its plot on the second part of the book and the adult children, played by James Dean (Carl the Cain ). and Richard Davalos (Aron the Abel).
But the full story of Adam and Cathy had already been told on TV, in a two-part miniseries in 1981. The first part featured Jane Seymour as the sinner.
There is no information yet on a preview date or a forecast for the start of recordings.
