FIFA president calls for ‘automatic defeat’ in cases of racism in football

Gianni Infantino has spoken out after AC Milan goalkeeper Maignan was the target of racism.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino intervened this Saturday (20th), after the French goalkeeper Mike Maignan, of Milan, was the target of racism during the match against Udinese, in the Italian championship. The match was interrupted for a few minutes and the episode prompted a harsh response from Infantino.

Seeking zero tolerance in cases of discrimination in football, the FIFA president defended “automatic defeat” for the team whose fans commit acts of racism during the match and such actions cause matches to be stopped.

Infantino also cited another case of racism, but this time it occurred in the city of Sheffield, England. For the FIFA president, what is necessary now is to have less and less tolerance for similar episodes in football.

In the match valid for the Italian Championship, Milan ended up beating Udinese 3 to 2. The winning goal was scored by Noah Okafor, in injury time of the match played in the city of Udine.

Check out Infantino’s statement this Saturday:

“The events that occurred on Saturday in Udine and Sheffield are absolutely abhorrent and completely unacceptable. There is no place for racism or any form of discrimination, whether in football or in society. The players affected by Saturday’s events have my full support.

We need all stakeholders to act, starting with education in schools, so that future generations understand that this is not part of football or society.

In addition to the three-step process (match abandoned, match interrupted again and game abandoned), we need to implement automatic defeat for the team whose fans committed racist acts and caused the match to be abandoned, as well as bans from stadiums throughout the world and criminal charges for racists.

FIFA and football express full solidarity with the victims of racism and all forms of discrimination. Once and for all: no to racism! No to any form of discrimination!”
