Cillian Murphy had a nice morning: the Oscar nominations were revealed this Tuesday (23) and the actor was nominated for “Best Actor” for his work in “Oppenheimer”. This is the Irishman’s first appearance at the awards. Additionally, the film held the nomination record this year with 13 mentions, including “Best Film” and “Best Director” (for Christopher Nolan).
In an interview with Variety Shortly after the announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is responsible for awarding the awards, Murphy revealed where he was when he received the news and what his expectations were for the event. Furthermore, the interpreter of J. Robert Oppenheimer talked about his next film and “Peaky Blinders”. Nolan also said this about Cillian Murphy.
Cillian Murphy nominated for “Oppenheimer”
According to Cillian Murphy, he was in the kitchen of his parents’ home in Cork, Ireland when he learned he had been nominated for an Oscar for the first time.
He told the magazine that he took a few days off and was with his parents and wife watching the nominations. When his name was called, he was drinking a cup of tea and eating sponge cake prepared by his mother.
Murphy stressed that he was proud of “Oppenheimer” (the film competes in 12 other categories and is this year’s biggest nominee) and his co-stars.
I’m really honored and a little excited. But most of all, proud of the film and proud to have achieved so much. It exceeded all of our expectations, of any of us involved in the production of this film. There are people who come up to me on the street all the time and say, “I’ve seen the movie five times.” […] It’s crazy. And then to be recognized by the Academy like we were, it’s just mind-blowing.

Murphy was also asked what he thinks J. Robert Oppenheimer would think of the repercussions of the film and the nomination. He replied that in his opinion the physicist would be happy and “satisfied” with the way in which the topic of nuclear weapons was addressed, underlining the importance of the topic.
Expectations for the Oscars
Murphy revealed that he plans to take his wife and children to the Oscars ceremony, which will take place on March 10 in Los Angeles. Since the event doesn’t include dinner, he joked that he’ll bring some of his mother’s sponge cake in his wife’s bag.
He also said he has received advice from friends who have attended the awards in the past and said he will go “heart-open” to take advantage of it, because it is something “that may never happen again”.
The actor also said that, at other events during this year’s awards season, he met the actors from “Succession,” his favorite series at the moment.
Other works by Cillian Murphy
In the interview, the actor also talked about his next work.
He stressed that his next film, “Small Things Like These”, will be the first Irish film to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and that it is a very important project for him. Murphy produced and stars in the film, adapted from one of his favorite books.
Matt Damon is another credited producer on the film, and Cillian Murphy said he approached him with the idea while filming “Oppenheimer.”
As for “Peaky Blinders,” the actor said he is proud of the series, which he considers “high-quality television,” and if the movie is as special as the show, he will be there. After six seasons, the series will have a final feature film.
