Will Cesar 2024: Anatomy of a Fall break the nominations record?

Will Cesar 2024: Anatomy of a Fall break the nominations record?

The 49th award ceremony of French cinema is approaching. A month before the start of the High Mass, the Cesar Academy today revealed the nominees for the next edition.

Thomas Keel’s Animal Kingdom leads with 12 nominations, ahead of Justin Triet’s Anatomy of a Palme d’Or (11) and I’ll Always See Your Face by Jean Herr (9).

So there’s no record this year, unlike 2022, where Xavier Gianoli’s Illusions Perdues held the record 15 nominations.

Still on the record side, let’s celebrate Virgin Ephyra (nominated for Love and Valerie Donzel’s The Woods), who becomes the first actress to be nominated for four consecutive years in the Best Actress category (beating the record previously held by Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Hooper, Christine Scott Thomas, Catherine Deneuve and Laure Kalam).

3 directors were nominated for best direction

Note the double nominations for Raphael Couinard (Best Actor and Best Actor) and The Dog from the Garbage Garden (7 nominations), the first straight nomination for Best Picture and Best First Feature.

Technically, Raphael Quennard is even nominated 3 times for 3 different films, because in addition to Yannick (Best Actor) and The Dog from Scrapper (Revelation), he is also in the Best Documentary Short category with The Actor (which he stars in and directed by Hugo with David).

Let’s also mention in the category of revelations the face of two brothers: Paul Kircher (animal kingdom) facing younger brother Samuel Kircher (last summer).

Virgin Broadcasting, Noemi Merlanti and Revenge of the Forgotten Directors at the 2023 César Awards

After last year’s uproar when no female director was nominated, this year there are 3 (Justine Triet, Kathryn Brillitt, and Gene Hare) in the Best Director category.

Two films by female directors (Iris Kaltenback’s Le Rapissement and Lea Domenach’s Bernadette) are also nominated in the first feature category. On the first feature side, note the horror film nomination of Sebastien Vanicek’s Vermin.

The 49th Caesar ceremony will take place on February 23, 2024. It will be broadcast live by Canal+ from the legendary Olympia Hall. The event will also be visible on Canal+’s Dailymotion channel.

The Academy elects a president every year. In 2024, this role will be played by Valerie Lemercier. A remarkable return to the ceremony. In 2010, he presented the event for the last time. For reference, it was Tahar Rahim who chaired the 48th edition. Christopher Nolan and Agnes Jauy will be the honorary Caesars of 2024.

For reference, last year, Louis Garrel’s L’Innocent was the favorite at the 2023 Césars, with 11 nominations. Dominique Molly’s 12th Night was the 2nd most quoted film. But, in reality, which film won the most Césars in February 2023?
