The reboot of the “Spy Kids” franchise, in development for Netflix, has defined its cast.
Actors Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) and Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) Will be the parents of the new “Spy Kids”. Adult protagonists of the plot, will play a couple of international spies.
His children will be played by Everly Carganilla (“The Afterparty”) and newcomer Connor Esterson.
In the storyline, the kids enter the family business after unknowingly helping an evil game developer release a computer virus that gives them control of all the technology on the planet, prompting them to become spies to save their parents and the world.
Creator and director of the films in the franchise, Robert Rodriguez returns to his roles behind the camera in the new production, which does not yet have a preview date.
Rodriguez released the original film in 2001, followed by “Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams” the following year and “Spy Kids 3: Game Over” shortly thereafter. But he let several years go by to reprise the saga with “Spy Kids 4” in 2011, showing the original children as teenagers.
The original cast included Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as parents, and Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara as children. Up until the current film, the four actors had participated in the entire franchise.
The new “Spy Kids” is Rodriguez’s second children’s revival on Netflix. The reboot of “Spy Kids” was commissioned shortly after the success of “Tiny Great Heroes”, in which the director saved the characters from his film “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D” (2005) for the platform streaming. .
