An unexpected success
Aquaman has never been my favorite hero. I always liked the realism of Batman and I didn’t understand how someone who talks to fish could be so powerful: the great series “The Boys” plays with this.
But, even if I don’t like it, I have to admit: the new film is a relative success – above all thanks to the protagonist: Jason Momoa, the eternal Khal Drogo, from “Game of Thrones”.
The sequel just crossed the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office. To be exact, it’s $412.7 million. A number that places the film in the 14th most watched place of 2023, surpassing “Megatubarão 2” (397.7 million dollars) and “Indiana Jones and Destiny’s Call” (383.9 million dollars).
It’s also by far DC’s biggest hit of last year, far more than “The Flash” ($270.6 million), “Shazam! The Wrath of the Gods” ($133.8 million) and “Blue Beetle” ($129.2 million).
Now, why did I say relative? Because the numbers, although positive, are much lower than those of other successes of the label, such as “Aquaman” itself, which grossed 1.15 billion dollars in 2018.
Let’s remember that “Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom” is the last feature film of the so-called DCEU, the Expanded Universe of DC Comics at the cinema. From now on, Superman and company will usher in the DCU, which will be led by James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy”).
