Anyone who is a film enthusiast already knows that the beginning of the year brings with it the main awards of the genre, but not only the best ones are highlighted, not to mention the Golden Raspberry. Those who stand out for their worst results will certainly have confirmation of their presence among the candidates for the infamous trophy.
The first three months of the year are full of great audiovisual events. In this period the most important film, television and music awards in the world take place. In addition to the Oscar, they compete for nominations in various categories at famous awards such as Golden Globe, SAG Awards, Emmy, Critics Choice Movie Awards, BAFTA.
These attract attention by rewarding the best, but another, equally well-known, has made a name for itself by rewarding the worst. We are talking about the Golden Raspberry, the award that chooses the worst films, actors, actresses, directors, remakes and other elements of the productions released in the last year. The ceremony is kind of Oscar on the contrary, and to underline the comparison, it deliberately takes place the day before the ceremony for the coveted golden statuette.
The name “raspberry” comes from the expression “to blow a raspberry,” which means to simulate the sound of flatulence with your mouth. The winners of the 44th Golden Raspberry Awards will be revealed on March 9 (the 2024 Oscars take place on March 10).
It all started as a joke and grew and grew…
The official and original name in English is Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as Razzies and Razzie Awards (a sort of abbreviation). It is considered by many to be a humorous, satirical and parody award at the Oscars.
The Golden Raspberry was created by Hollywood publicist John Wilson in 1981. He says that after seeing the musicals Xanadu and Can’t Stop the Music in 1980, he got the idea for the award.
Its goal was to make a joke and reward the worst actors, films and other cinematic attributes presented during the year. And so, on March 31, 1981, the Golden Raspberry Awards were born.
How’s the Golden Raspberry vote going?
The Razzies (“Golden Raspberry Award Foundation”), responsible for the Golden Raspberry Award, has 1,179 voting members, including movie fans, film critics and journalists from 49 US states and approximately two dozen countries.
Voting for candidates takes place virtually, with each voter choosing five contestants for each of the nine categories. Since 2012, visitors to the Rotten Tomatoes site have collaborated in voting on the categories.
The ceremony always has a trademark mocking tone and normally follows the Oscar programme. It was originally held on the same day and currently takes place the day before the Academy nominations and awards.
The “pineapple trophy”
The prize is a plastic raspberry on Super-8 film painted with gold paint. The winners are invited to receive the prize and some accept, personally participating in the event.
On January 22, Golden Raspberry announced the list of nominees for the 2024 award.
The film The Expendables 4 leads the ranking, with 7 nominations. The Exorcist: The Devoted and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are tied for second place, with 5 nominations each.
The three are competing in the Worst Film category, which also includes Megajaws 2 and Shazam! The fury of the gods.
And the Golden Raspberry goes to…
After Worst Film, the main categories are Worst Actor and Worst Actress. Among the nominees are big Hollywood names, such as Vin Diesel (Fast and Furious 10), Chris Evans (Ghosted: No Answer), Megan Fox (Johnny & Clyde) and Jennifer Lopez (The Mother).
