‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan believes films will become less defined by franchises
After the box office success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan states that the scenario in the cinema “is kind of encouraging”. The director believes that films will be less defined by franchises: “I believe that the success of Oppenheimer It certainly points to a kind of post-franchise, post-intellectual property landscape for movies — it’s kind of encouraging.”
In a podcast interview Countdown to the BAFTAspresented by Alex Zane,Nolan said that the feature film starring Cillian Murphy showed “studios that there is an interest in something that people haven’t seen before, or an approach that people haven’t tried yet.”
Everyone has a tendency to look down on the film industry. The entire time I’ve been working on film, I’ve felt like the cultural establishment has been predicting the decline of movie theaters, and now I’m being asked this question: ‘What do I think about the health of the film industry?’ And I really don’t know how to respond. We recently released an R-rated, three-hour movie about quantum physics, and it grossed a billion dollars. Like this? Obviously, our view is that audiences are excited to see something new.
The filmmaker then concluded by pointing out that films that do not belong to franchises can still be successful: “Just as we were able to highlight Avengers: Endgame for its unlikely length for such an incredibly successful film, something like Oppenheimer working gives other filmmakers a point of reference for how something might work in the marketplace that the studio can identify with.”
