In 2004, a prostitution ring was discovered in a massage parlor in Odessa, Texas. A total of 60 subscribers were arrested. Among them, important figures from the region. Six years later, the novel inspired a television movie, The Double Life of Samantha.
The story, which takes many liberties with reality, tells the story of Samantha Horton, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, a mother and unemployed masseuse. In the conditions of great financial difficulty, she applies for a job in a massage parlor.
A taboo subject
On the ground, the new employee discovers that the company is actually a house of prostitution, where passes are made for a lot of money. Reluctant at first, Samantha sees it as an opportunity to escape her family’s hardships and agrees to participate in the network. A young woman who takes refuge in drugs then falls into a spiral.
Produced by Lifetime – an American channel specializing in TV movies – Samantha’s double life When it came out, it had the merit of addressing a topic that was taboo for the general public, even if it all remains very hackneyed.
“A fairly well-made film with an interesting plot. I appreciated that we talked about prostitution without descending into vulgarity, as is often the case on television.“, writes user AlloCiné – where the film gets a 3 out of 5.Interesting plot and very charming storyConstant M. adds.
When a movie becomes a TV series
For her interpretation, Jennifer Love Hewitt – amazing in this role – received a Golden Globe nomination. Also a producer, the actor has regained the film rights to make a TV series called The Client List.
The program takes the concept of the story but changes many aspects. Samantha Horton becomes Riley Parks, her husband has left home and the tone is radically different.
Where Samantha’s Double Life tries to take the issue of prostitution seriously, The Client List leans more towards comedy, focusing more on the plasticity of its cast than on its message – earning it many negative reviews. The series was canceled after two seasons.
The Double Life of Samantha is available on Netflix. Both seasons of The Client List are available on TF1+.
