Since the publication of his legendary literary saga in 1996 (and especially its adaptation for television with the TV series Game of Thrones, since 2011), American author George A.R. Martin is one of the world’s leading authorities on fantasy.
The one who takes millions of readers (and then viewers) to the inhospitable lands of Westeros, organizing a bloody power struggle with dragons and immortals, also has his own records in the field in which he excels.
But what are his favorite works in the field? In 2017, before the final season of Game of Thrones aired on HBO, the famous writer agreed to reveal The Daily Beast It ranks among the top 10 fantasy films.
“If you don’t like these movies, you don’t like fantasy.”
As surprising as it may seem (given the vast difference in tone between Martin’s and Tolkien’s works), it’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy created by Peter Jackson in the early 2000s that tops his list.
“I could list these three movies in my top 3, but honestly, it’s just one long movie. (…)Just as Tolkien’s “trilogy” was actually one long novel, divided into three parts by decree of the publisher.– said George Martin at the microphone The Daily Beast.
“The Lord of the Rings film has long been considered impossible, and Ralph Bakshi’s various animation efforts at Rankin-Bass have proven as much, but Peter Jackson’s wonderful epic has refuted all the pessimists. (…) It was as faithful and respectful an adaptation as you could dream of. If you don’t like these movies, you don’t like fantasy.”
Considered one of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings works, the Game of Thrones author has revealed his 9 other favorite fantasy films.
