It’s the anti-Paddington: just a few days until you discover the funniest teddy bear in cinema on Prime Video

In 2012, audiences discovered Teddy in theaters, a comedy directed and filmed by Seth MacFarlane. Contrary to what the poster suggested, this wasn’t a kid’s movie at all, but a very school production like the Americans know how to do.

John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) plays the main role in it. When he was little, he wanted his Christmas bear to come to life and become his best friend for life. Almost 30 years later, the story doesn’t really feel like a Christmas story anymore. Teddy’s omnipresence by John’s side complicates his personal and professional life.

Great success, but…

Teddy is a hit in theaters, so much so that Universal immediately begins work on the second part. But between the release of the first and second films, Seth MacFarlane is a mess.

The production company is suing the director and his team for copyright infringement, accusing them of copying “Charlie the Offensive Teddy Bear” into their web series, which also features a teddy bear that’s a little too vulgar. The legal battle lasted for several months and eventually the company withdrew the complaint.

Meanwhile, Ted 2 — still starring Wahlberg and MacFarlane — is out in theaters (we’re in 2015). And this is a cold shower, because this sequel does not have the same success as the first part.

With lower than expected numbers, less than good reviews and lawsuits that gave them bad press, Universal decided not to continue the adventures of the “cute” little bear.

Ted: Back in a different form

But that was until 2021. That year, the studios announced the return of Ted. Not Ted 3, but the series, in the form of a prequel. The action takes place in the 90s, when Johnny embarks on an adventure with his fluffy best friend. Exit Wahlberg, it was a young Max Burkholder who was chosen to lead the project, the official synopsis of which is here:

In 1993, Ted Bear lives in a working-class neighborhood in Boston with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, his parents, and his cousin. Teddy may not be the best influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s willing to take any risk to help his friends and family.

The Ted series is available in the US from January 11 on the Peacock platform. With an 8/10 rating on IMDB, it seems to have been a hit with fans. It remains to be seen if it will one day be available in France and, if so, on which streaming platform.

Ted leaves the Prime Video catalog on February 15.
