The musical The color purple, directed by Blitz Bazawule, comes out on Brazilian screens this Thursday (08). Actress Danielle Brooks is among those nominated for the 2024 Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance as Sofia in the film.
The color purple is based on the novel of the same name written by Alice Walker. The story develops based on letters written by a young woman addressed to God. Celie (Fantasia Barrino) is an African-American woman who lives in the southern United States at the beginning of the 20th century and tries to overcome the trauma left by the abuse she suffered from father and husband over the years and, to achieve this, she will have to count on the support and strength of a sisterhood of women.

Oscar nominees in theaters
Three more Oscar-nominated films have hit Brazilian screens in recent weeks. One of them was the mix of romance, Victorian era and science fiction Poor creatures, by Yorgos Lanthimos, premiered last Thursday (1st). Next to Oppenheimerby Christopher Nolan, Poor creatures led the Oscar nominations. Lanthimos’ film was nominated in 11 categories, including: Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress.
In the film, young Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is brought back to life by scientist Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), but with the brain of a child. Wanting to see more of the world, she runs away with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) and travels across continents. Free from the prejudices of her time, Bella demands equality and liberation.
Emma Stone has already won 14 awards for her portrayal of Bella, including the Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Awards. Additionally, Emma’s work in Lanthimos’ film made her the favorite for the Best Actress Oscar.
Two more Oscar-nominated films debuted on the big screen in Brazil on January 25: Past lives, by Céline Song; AND Anatomy of a fall, by Justine Triet. The first feature film was nominated in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Film categories, while the second competes in the Best Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Director and Best Film categories.
Romanticism Past lives tells the story of South Korean friends Nora (Greta Lee) and Tem Yoo (Hae Sung). They meet again in New York, United States, 20 years after Nora left South Korea with her family. During a fateful week, they grapple with notions of love, destiny and choices.
In French suspense Anatomy of a fall, Sandra, a famous writer, is suspected of killing her husband. Samuel’s death occurred in the Swiss Alps, where the couple lived with their son Daniel, 11, in an isolated hut.
Sandra’s trial, both in court and on the internet (especially social media), raises reflections on information and truth today. In addition to the Oscar nomination, the film won the Palme and the Golden Globe in the foreign film category.
